Two of them, the two eldest daughters, were presumptuous and vain, and the youngest, whom they called Bella because of her beauty, was, however, humble and kind. They all always had suitors willing to marry them. But while the two older sisters contemptuously rejected all the candidates, as they longed to marry a nobleman, Bella received them and conversed with them, although she politely rejected them. A stroke of bad fortune made the merchant lose all his wealth, so all the suitors disappeared, since money was the only reason to marry such women.
