The film Stars at Noon will open the eleventh edition of the Panama International Film Festival, an event that will take place from December 2 to 4.

Its director, French filmmaker Claire Denis, will come to the country to screen the film, the IFF Panama Foundation reported this Wednesday, November 9.

It should be remembered that Stars at Noon was shot in Panama, in 2021. The film is an adaptation of the 1986 novel by the American Denis Johnson and is set in Nicaragua in the 1980s, in full conflict due to the Sandinista revolution.

Last May, Stars at Noon won the Grand Prix, Jury Prize, at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. The film – released on October 14 in the United States – stars Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn, Benny Safdie, Danny Ramirez and John C. Reilly.

The IFF Panama Foundation also announced that this edition has a selection of 16 films, national and international guests, and a complete educational program to promote the development of the local and regional industry.

The opening ceremony of the festival will take place on Friday, December 2 at the Athenaeum of the City of Knowledge.

In this new edition, the International Film Festival has a cut of several days in its programming, which in its tenth version was held from December 2 to 9, 2021.

"This year we will have a Festival that is smaller than in the past, but powerful, with cinema gems that represent the best of the seventh art with rich and deep narratives," said Bernardo Ordás Guardia, director of the IFF Panama Foundation (FIP) and the International Film Festival.

"Together with the State, the private company and the civilian population, we have managed to produce this powerful edition of IFF Panama and it will be absolutely magical. It is not all bad news," said Pituka Ortega, who now chairs the Foundation and the Festival after directing the exhibition since its inception.

In addition to screenings in theaters, in this edition the IFF returns with the "Cinema al aire libre", free performances for the whole family in the inner courtyard of the "La Manzana" cultural center, in the Santa Ana neighborhood, close to the old town from Panama City.

Other venues for the festival are the Canal Museum Theater and the La Compañía hotel in the Old Town, as well as the Ateneo Theater in the City of Knowledge on the banks of the interoceanic highway.

As in previous editions, this year there will be workshops, talks and master classes given by internationally renowned filmmakers and professionals, aimed at the industry, the general public and adolescents, young people, girls and boys.

In the last 10 years, IFF Panama has attracted more than 170,000 spectators and 980 guests from more than 24 countries.
